Anticipation builds as multi-sport athletes country-wide prepare for the awe-inspiring Totalsports Challenge, presented by New Balance and REHIDRAT® SPORT. Taking place on Saturday, 14 January 2012 this much loved event will celebrate its 10th anniversary on the day.
Although the individual men’s and women’s categories of the Totalsports Challenge demand the admiration of all, the 7-member team category never fails to entertain with professionals from various disciplines uniting on the day to form what has affectionately become known as the Totalsports Challenge “All Star” teams. To date team New Balance, Totalsports and My Training Day/JAG have dominated in the 7-member male team category.
According to top South African paddler Lance King, competing as part of a team at the Totalsports Challenge is a lot of fun. “It is nice to combine my fitness and experience with that of other like-minded professionals. Competing as part of a team is great as you have nothing to lose, with each member literally giving his all in his discipline. Although I enjoy the entire event, I love racing my discipline, the 13km K1 canoe. The most exciting part is when my team mate arrives, with it comes the anticipation of finding out how large the gap is between us and the next team. When you finish your leg of the race you know that you have made that winning contribution (should you win). In 2011 our team, New Balance Pro Men’s Team, was very well matched with that of our competitors. Our win on the day literally came down to the mountain bike discipline. This is the one discipline that can make or break a team’s chances of winning. The best part of the Totalsports Challenge is without a doubt the coming together of South Africa’s most elite athletes combined with the excitement of not knowing what is happening out on the course until the moment of hand over, when it’s your turn to perform. Having said that, I have a lot of respect for those athletes that compete individually at an event of this nature,” says King.
